While seeding will still matter, coach Gregg Popovich will not put seeding over the health of his team.

Mark Jackson played for seven different squads from 1987 to 2004, most notably on the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers. Their lack of backcourt and frontcourt defense did them in last year as the David Lee acquisition couldn’t compensate for the defensive shortcomings of the team.

Although David Lee put up 16.5 points and 9.8 boards for Golden State last year, he is more of an offensive player down low and his lack of blocks is a weakness for the squad. Dorell Wright came out of nowhere to contribute a big offensive spark with his shooting, but he is no defensive stopper as well.

Andris Biedrins must remain completely healthy for the entire season if he wants to help Golden State, because when fully healthy he can provide a huge lift with rebounding and on contesting shots on the inside. They added Kwame Brown in free agency to give the team another defensive presence inside. Brown averaged 7.9 points and 6.8 boards for the Bobcats last year.

Golden State was able to pick up valuable pieces from the draft in the offseason as they were able to get Klay Thompson, Charles Jenkins and Jeremy Tyler. They do lose Reggie Williams, Vladimir Radmanovic and Acie Law in free agency, but these rookies will prove to be an upgrade.

Head coach Mark Jackson praised rookie Klay Thompson claiming that he was “a big time talent” and one who will “play from the start”, Klay Thompson put up 21.6 points/game for the Cougars in his junior year before leaving early for the NBA draft.

WESTERN CONFERENCE PREDICTION: 3rd PACIFIC DIVISION

While the Warriors will play a fun and exciting game this year and will look to improve from its 36-46 record, with our NBA predictions we think they will have a hard time ending up any higher than 3rd in this improving division. The Lakers are still the team to beat in the division, and the Clippers are going to come on strong with the acquisition of Chris Paul. Golden State has improved offensively, but they simply haven’t done enough to take care of their defensive needs. Thanks to a midseason trade that sent Mo Williams to the Clippers, the Cavaliers got the Clippers first round pick that ended up being the 1st overall. Varejao is one of the most passionate basketball players in the league and plays with a lot of energy. His play on the defensive end is important and he is also a very solid rebounder. For Cleveland to find success however, he needs to stay on the floor.

Cleveland dealt away talented power forward J.J. Hickson for small forward Omri Casspi. Casspi is expected to start right away at the small forward position and the team hopes that he can make the next step to being a big time contributor and a full-time starter. Casspi put up 10.6 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Kings last year.

Anthony Parker will still be the starting shooting guard for the Cavaliers while Daniel Gibson will be the backup 2-guard to provide more of an offensive spark off the pine.

Prediction – 5th Eastern Conference Central Division: There is no questions in anybody’s mind that this Cavs team is a much better team compared to last year, but there is just no way of knowing if that improvement will translate to wins. Thus their NBA Finals odds are pretty low. Cleveland can certainly bolt to as high as 3rd in their division, but the more likely scenario is for the Cavs to struggle early with a rookie running the show and slowly get better as the year rolls along.

Oklahoma City will have a starting lineup filled with definite talent in almost every position, both from the starters and off the bench. Their starting backcourt will incorporate all star PG Russell Westbrook who averaged 21.9 points, 8.2 assists, 4,6 rebounds and 1.9 steals last season and defensive expert SG Thabo Sefolosha, who can close down the opposing team’s best scorer.

OKC has great depth behind both Westbrook and Sefolosha at the guard position.
