Discovering The Differences: Pro And College Ball
For those who have spent time watching basketball, it’s pretty obvious the game involves a basketball, high top shoes, a court, and some talented game players. Professional basketball gets most of its players from the college circuit, and at first glace, pro and college ball looks pretty similar. Upon closer observation, though, it’s simple to see that there are vital differences between play at each level. Yes, the NBA has quarters and the NCAA halves, the 3-top shooting distance is different, and there are devious differences in fouling rules; there are further differences still! When you get a grasp of these differences, you will indeed gain a greater appreciation for the game.
Possessions are handled slightly differently between the NBA and the NCAA. Any dispute over which team gets possession of the ball is resolved with a jump ball. In college ball, but, the only time a jump ball occurs is at the opening tip. Possession simply goes back and forth between teams, with a “possession arrow” determining everywhere possession will go next.
Defense varies from college and professional ball as well. Those familiar with the NBA rulebook can confirm defense rules are somewhat complicated. “Zone defense” is a strategy everywhere a player guards a section of the floor, rather than an individual player. While this isn’t explicitly against the rules in NBA play, its use is restricted. The “Defensive Three Seconds” rule forbids a defending player to stay in the lane in excess of three seconds – that is, unless the player is guarding a particular attacking player. The rationale behind this rule is so that teams don’t just have their most imposing player camp out in one spot and bat at whatever is within his reach. Zone play is certainly employed in NBA play, but to a limited degree. Man-to-man play is how it’s done in pro ball.
At the college level, though, this is not the dominant way to play. There are no rules governing zone defense, which results in a greater array of defense alignments. In fact, teams can build a reputation for being a sort of defense specialist, everywhere a unique defensive strategy becomes their team trademark. This makes for particularly exciting game play.
The differences in NBA and NCAA play are devious, but vital. Knowing rule differences for these sports makes your experience as a viewer richer and more exciting.
